The Role of the Investment Company

procurement of funds. The subject matter was primarily restricted to financial
problems that arose during periodic events like consolidation, merger,

manager was to raise externally the funds required by joint stock companies. The
internal administration of finance was either ignored or dealt with by the
promoter entrepreneur himself.
As time has passed, the investment manager's role has gone through drastic
changes. Currently, the investment manager determines the total amount of
capital needed for working capital and fixed capital (short and long-term). This
is done by proper forecasting and planning of finance. Secondly, their job
profile includes investing the funds in assets and projects, with the aim of
making profits. This is to be done in such a way that the earnings are more than
the cost so that there is a positive net return to the concern.
Today, the investment manager is focused on the management of assets, the
allocation and rising of capital and the valuation of the firm. Also, he has to
make sure to supply funds to all sections of the association, assess the
financial performance, consult with bankers, financial institutions and other
credit suppliers, and monitor quotations of the stock exchange and the behavior
of stock prices.
In order to be a good investment manager, he needs a variety of different
tools, like leverage, working capital management techniques, cost of capital,
capital budgeting, and fund flow and cash flow analysis. In order to decide on
the appropriate source of finance, cost of capital is needed. Normally the
sources with minimum costs are selected, so that the weighted average cost of
capital can be kept to a minimum. Capital budgeting helps in deciding the proper
investment mix; the available resources should be used in the most profitable
way. For this purpose, suitable projects should be selected from alternative
courses by using capital budgeting techniques.
